The Mouatt Family Tree

Mouatt - The meaning and origin of the name are not clear. It is the first surname record on the Shetland Islands and there are many Mouatt's still living there today.
It has also been associated with the Sutherland clan in Scotland. It is thought to originate from northern France (Monte Alto - High Hill) and may have arrived in Britain
with the Normans. However it is also thought to have been derived from the medieval female name Mohaut and the name of the official in charge of common land (Moward).
