Births, Deaths and Marriages
Sites that hold birth, marriage and death indexes post central registration (1837 in England & Wales)
Family Records CentreAlthough the FRC doesn't have searchable online indexes it does provide details of all the resources that it has in it's Islington office plus it allows certificates to be ordered online
General Register Office (Scotland)Similar to the FRC but has online searchable indexes as well. It also has indexes of Banns, Baptisms, Wills, Census returns and Parish registers
New South Wales BMDSearchable BMD index for New South Wales
Family Records CentreAlthough not online the Family Records Office in Islington holds census information there.
FreeBMDFreeBMD is a Charitable Trust that is intent on providing online indexes of all the BMD records of England and Wales. It is a massive ongoing project but many of the indexes prior to 1900 are complete and a good number after this.
Parish Registers
Sites that hold information from parish registers on birth, baptisms, marriages and deaths.
www.Ancestry.co.ukAncestry holds the 1851-1901 census returns aswell as some parish records in the form of Pallots Marriage Index and Pallots Baptism Index. It also holds a range of other records including ships passenger lists etc.

Family SearchThis site is run by The Church of the Latter Day Saints (Mormons) and provides free access to the 1881 census, as well as many parish records from around the world.
FreeRegThe counterpart to FreeBMD but for parish Registers. Still in it's very early days.

FreeCenSearchable index of the 1841,1851,1861,1871 and 1891 census. This is in its early days but is still growing
Family SearchThis site is run by The Church of the Latter Day Saints (Mormons) and provides free access to the 1881 census, as well as many parish records from around the world.
1901 Census OnlineOfficial 1901 Onlne census. Searching is free but you need to pay to see beyond the index.

Sites that hold military records including records of war dead
Commonwealth Graves CommissionProvides a searchable database of all those recorded on memorials or in graves cared for by the CGC. Information on each person recorded can include details of home address and next of kin.
Asplins Military HistoryA site that gives general background information particularly concerning the Boer War with information on some individuals. Particularly useful if trying to trace whether it is likely an ancestor served in this theatre of war.
The National ArchiveA huge repository of just about every subject that you can think of including Wills and military medals

Old Bailey ProceedingsA fascinating site that provides transcripts of trials held at the Old Bailey from 1674 to 1834 a great place to find the black sheep in your family
Booths Poverty SurveyCharles Booth survey London between 1886 and 1903 and recorded the relative wealth of every street. This site gives access to his poverty map and the notes he made as he walked the streets.

Moving HereBackground information on immigration into Britain valuable for those with relavtives arriving from abroad.
Access2Archives (A2A)An index of archives around the country which include everything from Letters to the Speaker of the House through to Insurance Policies. A useful place to search for the unexpected.
